Questions about knee pain

I wake up stiff in the morning, but I feel better after 20 minutes or so. Should I be concerned? I feel a kind of grating sensation, like sand, when I move my knee. What's causing this? I'm having trouble sleeping because my knee hurts. What should I do? It hurts to go up and down stairs sometimes. Is that osteoarthritis? Sometimes my knee hurts for weeks at a time, but then it gets better. Why is that happening?
